Clinical Supervisor
Cassie DeSena-Jacobs
DSW, LCSW, CCTP-II, MBA
My name is Cassie. I collaborate with Virginia Family Wellness as a clinical supervisor for social work students. I also work as an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in the School of Social Work, where I am the Director of Mental Health Initiatives. I am passionate about working with social work students to teach them advanced clinical classes and courses focusing on trauma and severe mental illness. Additionally, I have created mentorship opportunities in which I support individual students beyond the classroom throughout their educational journey. Many students have referred to this as restorative supervision. In this role, I help students identify and grow their passion for social work, mainly by focusing on social justice. I work to offer my experience and perspective outside of preexisting structures and supports.
My goal as a psychotherapist for over the last 18 years has been to be nonjudgmental and highlight a person's strengths as a way to process trauma and life events. My specialty is working with children, teens, and adults who have experienced trauma and abuse. I am trained in trauma-based practices, including CBT, trauma processing, somatic work, and polyvagal practices. I have worked with LGBTQIA clients, gender non-conforming clients, and trans clients, as well as individuals who are neurodivergent.
I believe deeply in the importance of supervision, and my supervision framework is informed by a culturally humble, anti-racist, and trauma-informed lens. I also try to incorporate interpersonal and humanistic practices into supervision.
